OpenAI Codex
OpenAI's coding agent, available in ChatGPT, a CLI and IDE extensions, that works on tasks in a sandbox and proposes changes.
Anthropic's coding agent that works in your terminal, IDE or browser, reading the codebase, editing files and running commands.
Claude Code is an agentic coding tool from Anthropic. You start it in a repository from the terminal, or use it through IDE extensions and the web, and describe what you want: fix a failing test, add an endpoint, refactor a module. It reads the relevant files, proposes and makes edits, runs commands such as tests and builds, and can create commits.
Developers use it for multi-step changes that would otherwise mean a lot of switching between editor and terminal, and for exploring an unfamiliar codebase by asking questions. Project instructions can live in a file in the repository, so the whole team gives it the same context.
Set permissions deliberately: decide which commands it may run without asking, keep it away from production credentials, and review its changes like any other pull request.
Not enough info yet on free plan or free version, can run on your own servers or machine, works in VS Code, works in JetBrains IDEs. Check the tool's own site.
